Guide to piracy by "upsideup"

----------------------------
I've written up a little guide that I plan to eventually post in the eve-o forums, mostly from stuff I've been taught from you guys, I think it could be very benefitial to our overall mission.

Feel free to give any tips or point out any errors.

I still need to write a preemptive antiflame paragraph, so expect that.

We all know what piracy is, destroying of ships for profit. If you do it for fun, thats greifing and a whole different scenario. Just because a pirate killed you and you didn't have anything for him, that does not make him a greifer, even shuttles can carry loot worth billions. This is my guide to belt piracy, which as you can imagine is done mostly in belts and complexes.

Theres a few things every true pirate should know 1) You will lose your ship. Can't say it more clearer then that, bad things will happen 10 guys will jump you at a gate and you will die. This is why I tend to fly cheap ships. 2) Some people will hate you. If you have problems with that stop reading now. 3) If you are nice, courteous and don't smack, people will respect you. So now, the guide. This guide assumes a general knowledge of pvp. Rule #1: Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever kill after a ransom where they pay. Ransoming: Ransoms are a huge source of cash, especially pod ransoms. Implants are worth nothing to you but are worth a ton to him, so lock down his pod and open a convo and give him a price based on his characters age. I've heard of pod ransoms going for as much as 50 million or more. Give a price based on character age and how the guy acts. If he tries to log out to save his pod and you manage to get it, double your price for him being an idiot and because now you know he has implants. Pod ransoms rock because you get nothing from killing the pod and ransoms can turn an easy, profitless kill into something that pays for your next ship. Ship ransoms are generally not as popular. Its hard to make the other guy stop shooting so unless you can tank him a long time, its not possible. Good ransoms are on like mining battleships. Lock them down, take then into structure and convo them. Tell them to stop shooting if they still are, then tell them to pay. Usually give them a price around what they would lose. i.e. Insurance cost or cost of the tech 2 ship. Don't be afraid to negotiate, if it makes you money its worth it. I tend not to like ship ransoms because when they pay really fast and easily, you know they may have had something worthwhile on board. General ransom tips: Don't take too long, and watch local. If you see local jump or if he may have friends in the system, ransom quick or not at all. Nothing is more embarassing then opening a convo and demanding money then getting blown up. How to find targets: Heres the toughest part and theres not much advice I can give. Get good with the scanner, be able to know exactly whats in the belts withing a few seconds of entering the system. Find a good scanning guide somewhere. A known pirate will very quickly be recognized in local by any smart character (and those are teh targets you want). So you need to be fast if you want to get the good targets. Belt Piracy should occur between .4s and .1s. Try to find a nice long 30+ chain of systems. General tips to avoid gankage: 1) After you attack someone in a .1 to .4 there is a 15 minutes timer where sentries at gates or stations will fire on you. During this timer, continue scanning belts for additional targets or simply sit in a safespot.
2) Don't enter high sec space one your security status gets messed up. A general guide from eve-o. Players with -1.5 or greater can enter all systems Players with -2.0 or worse cannot enter 1.0 systems Players with -2.5 or worse cannot enter 0.9 systems Players with -3.0 or worse cannot enter 0.8 systems Players with -3.5 or worse cannot enter 0.7 systems Players with -4.0 or worse cannot enter 0.6 systems Players with -4.5 or worse cannot enter 0.5 systems Once your security status reaches -5 you are considered an outlaw and can be attacked by players anywhere without CONCORD intervention. 3) Try to pirate in groups. This has 2 major advantages, you can take on tougher opponents and you are more likely to be able to beat whoever might come after you etc. One thing to keep in mind is that if someone attacks you at a gate and you are below -5 only you can retaliate, anyone else, whether in your gang or corp will get fired on by sentries. Recommended ships/setups: Almost any ship can be used to great success. Its a good idea to have a heavy tank, this allows you to survive more situations and possibly go through sentries when flagged for attacking someone. Obviously, you'll need at least on scrambler, a webifier is also another good idea. Battleships don't work so well for piracy, they are slow and locking is much more difficult. Also, ganksquads are more likely to see battleships as "worthwhile." In other words if you're in a megathron, someone is more likely to come after you wtih 10 guys and sit in the system for half an hour. People will still do this on smaller ships, don't ask me why, so be careful anyway. Also, rewards in piracy are rare. While you may get a 40 mil ransom, or kill a covetor with strip miner IIs, its not going to happen every day, every week or even every month. Because the money comes in sparse intervals if at all, its a good idea to fly a ship you can afford to lose several times over. Never pirate in a ship you can't afford to lose. If your ship setup calls for an mwd, its a good idea to carry around an afterburner just in case you see nice targets in a complex. Behavior: This is more important then you can possibly imagine. The only thing more important to a pirate then his ship is his reputation. If you want to receive ransoms you need people to trust you or better yet, like you. Always be nice and never smack. If someone asks for advice, give it. Never use warp stabs, if you are afraid to lose your ship, don't pirate in it and buy a cheaper ship. Its pathetic and it shows people that you plan to lose battles. Frankly, if you get killed with them on when you initiated combat, it should be flat out embarassing. Warp stabs belong on haulers and miners, NOT pirate ships. NEVER kill after a ransom, when you do that you hurt yourself, your corp and pirates as a whole. Why I wrote this guide: I'm really tired of these smacktards going around calling themselve pirates giving us all a bad name. Also, I think people need some sort of instruction to get anywhere in piracy and I'd like to see more people trying it. Last words: Learn to use the scanner, its your best friend. Thanks to the guys at snigg for teaching me most of this stuff YARRRRR!1!111!!!!1

I'm pretty sure I've seen this on Eve-o.

"We all know what piracy is, destroying of ships for profit. If you do it for fun, thats greifing and a whole different scenario."

I pirate for fun. Pirating is probably the thing in EVE that I enjoy the most, aside from small gang vs small(ish) gang ops and solo PVP (where both parties wanna fight). Seeing my wallet grow isn't that fun tbh. It's nice n all, but not fun in it self.

The point: Saying that any pirate pirates for isk only is silly, as there are much better ways of getting isk in EVE (afaik anyway).

Malken·

thats just dumb to call pirating for fun griefing.

Pirating however way you put it is fun, the isk is a way of making a living at it while having fun.

and yes there are other ways to make isk but i cant even imagine sitting and mining 23/7 being fun, its the most boring and mentally destabilizing thing you can do in eve.
ill rather make less isk and blow shit up then mine and be a veggie by the end of the day.
i play for fun.
dont call my fun griefing.

can i just add, as someone who doesnt really like pirates i do in a way 'respect' some ppl who follow ur above rules, i dont nessaccarily like them but i do respect them, the reason i posted this is to put a shout out to Ginger Magician (warning RANT!!), this ****** sits 160km from gates in a noob passage .4 system, fits at least 7 wcs on his mega (we've had him scrammed with a str6) and snipes every1 who comes thru. the second any1 he recognises enters he safespots and if we dont leave he logs and brings his alt on till we leave. This is the type of person who i dispise, and im sure those of u who kno ginger will recognise, his constant local chatter of 'I AM UBER, I KILL SO MANY PPL, I CAN KILL ANY1 IN 1VS1, I MAKE MORE MONEY THAN ANY PIRATE IN EVE' blah blah blah, its just pathetic and insulting.

Huuu ... I think the exact sentences were :
"We all know what piracy is, destroying of ships for profit. If you do it for fun, thats greifing and a whole different scenario. "

The author probably tried to say that *destroying of ships* for fun is greifing, instead of "pirating for fun*.

Pirating is really a funny way to earn ISK. But I agree that "destroying" ships for fun isn't that funny.

I have a quick question with regards to ransoms. Being a cute little carebear I've been ransomed a few times and therefore lost a few ships. I've never paid a ransom because I'm worried I'll be classed as an easy mark, potentially singled out for easy ISK in the future. Is this the case? Or would I be just another deposit in a bank account?

Keep up the "good" work you filthy pirates, while I don't agree with what you're doing you do make my EVE life more interesting.

Ander·

I usually dont consider people I manage to catch as easy-income. They are yet another number in my wallet when they have paid up.

I dont see who paid what, I dont write down who paid what. It's different from time to time, no ransom is the same.

Who would class you as an easy mark? Certainly not me. However by saying "f*ck you pirate, I wont pay your ransom!!" it'll usually mean that the next time I catch that person he wont get the ransom question.. I'll just shoot him down instantly on sight.

Anonymous·

Ah, I see.

I'd say that it's a balance between killing and isk that makes pirating funny. Gotta love dem explosions =)

Errol·

Aha, righteo, thanks for the info. As for the response to a ransom demand I usually yell "Death before Taxes!" or something similarly stupid in the last moments before my ship explodes around me.

Cheers for responding Ander

Jordania·

Definitely not, in my situation anyway. I don't think I have ever ransomed the same player twice. Those that pay get to go, those that don't get ganked. If I ever lock you down and ransom you then you say but I paid you yesterday! I will go have a look and maybe half the ransom fee :P

Alot of my pirating is done away from my home system and most of the locals are quite friendly to me because hey can mine/npc whatever, when I am in system. Had a chat with some of them and the are pretty cool for carebears :P A couple are the exact opposite though. As soon as I warp into my home system after a hard nights pirating the "PIRATE IN LOCAL" chants start coming, even though they know that I am only stopping in to dock/kit out ship/sell shit whatever. Same guys everytime.

Malka Badi'a·

I murder for fun. I am a griefer, not a pirate. To hell with profit.

Slink Grinsdikild·

I fly solo and disagree with the automatic NO to warpcore stabs. I use autocannons which leave me vunerable to 20km scramblers on fast ships.. especially in 0.0 you will find people who camp in Interceptor gangs just waiting to swarm lone, slower targets such as me.

There is nothing wrong with using 2-3 stabs to make up for the weakness of your ship, imho.

Anyhow nice guide.. :)

Iain·

Nice guide, makes me consider pirating as a career option in EvE. Oh, and who kills for fun? You are a bad peson =P

Dark_Angel·

Im playing for 2 months and willing to start piracy a lil bit.But ive got important implants on me and cant afford to lose them.=/ what will i do ?

Neima·

You need to create a jumpclone ! If you don't know what it is, look at guides on EvE official web site !

The Sven·

Best thing to do is to get a jump clone and don't put any imps in it :)

Hidioshi·

Do some missions for one corp until you have +8 rating. Get some jump clones, you can have a couple of days pirating then go back to your implanted guy and make a little isk missioning.

Sauce_MOnstur·

Jump clone

Not_Telling·

hop in a jump clone when ur doing pvp. that way ya dont have to worry about ur implants

Unknown·

create a jump clone and use that for piracy, while your beefed up clone sits safely in a vat somewhere..

killer500·

its not griefing, carebears just hate losing, how about u stay in high sec nub

Zane·

Killing for fun makes you a bad person?
