A small guide from the pirate Ander's point of view.
The ransom
Most of the times a pirate who will try to ransom you finds you hopping through belts, either killing NPC's or mining.
First you'll have to think about your possibilites.
- Do I have the necessary survivability to fight back?
- Do you have any backup to come aid you?
If you answered no to any of these questions skip to "Pay the ransom"-section of this thread.
If you answered yes you can try to fight back or keep trying to survive as long as you can until backup arrives.
However, it's most likely that the pirate hasnt revealed all of his cards just yet.
If the pirate has backup in the system, you might aswell tell your friends to stay clear and limit the losses as they'd make fine ransom targets aswell. You will also just be risking risking your own ship if the pirate sees your friends entering the system. At this point he will put all his offensive forces to take you down before he warps to a safespot.
How do you know if the pirate is going to ransom you or not?
Well, if he shoots you to pieces on sight you already know the answer.
The first thing a ransoming pirate will do is to take you down to hull or to rougly 10-25% armour. This is mainly a point to show that he can and WILL kill you unless you pay the ransom. You will also find yourself scrammed and possibly webbed. Shortly after you should expect a conversation request from the pirate or anyone in his corporation.
What do you do when you get ransomed?
First off, take it easy! There's a very low chance that he will shoot you down if you pay the ransom. Infact, any pirate who makes himself known for shooting down his pray after recieving the ransom isn't kindly looked upon by others and he's likely to never find any "customers" to actually pay him.
- An important point to remember is that you should NOT by anymeans smacktalk or be otherwise disrespectful. At this moment you are the one whose life is in his hands.
- Turn off your engines, disable your turrets and withdraw your drones. Any offensive force which you present will not be looked upon kindly. A pirate wont want to risk his own ship and will shoot you to pieces instead.
How much you should pay is up to the pirate. But the decision to get blown up or pay the price is yours. A good price to ask for is often the 70 to 99% of the insurance plus an extra portion to cover the expensive modules. A good pirate will take your character into account when asking for a price.
Don't be upset if a pirate asks 15mill isk for your insured and cheaply fitted Brutix. If you're a year old, you're not supposed to be flying it with basic pdu's, small lasers or other cheap fitting.
Ask him politely to revise his price if this is the case, but trying to or even tricking a pirate will earn you a kill on sight the next time you pass in the system.
Remember, that it's not actual ISK which costs you the most by losing a ship. It's the time spent on refitting it and getting a new ship. If you feel it's worth it not to pay the ransom, that's fine. You'll be blown out of the skies and the killmail will most likely be posted on the pirates corporation killboard or eve-kills.com and your modules looted and sold.
Log-off tactics?
Basicly dont do it. Most pirates will shoot your ship or pod to shreds. The pirate can sit in space at the exact location you logged off from and wait for you return. When you do return, expect to be dealt with swiftly.
Not paying your ransom?
Fine :)
Most likely if you can afford to lose the ship you're going to be rich. Rich enough to have nice modules. That means Im still making an earning.
Got killed even though you paid the ransom?
Contact the CEO of the corp the pirate is a member of, or anyother public relations person. Usually such behavior will not be tolerated. In worst case, contact me
