EVE ONLINE under LINUX

Ander·

Today I signed up for a cedega/transgaming account. Yes, I wont pirate cedega ;)
but it's also going to be the start for my article-series on running eve-online stable under linux.

I'll be trying out different hardware-types and report on the success and obstacles.
Hopefully it'll be possible :) and I wont crash out too often during battle...

First out will be my old P4 1,5ghz 512mb ram. Using a noname graphics-card ( I dont expect wonders ) and then I'll be switching to a GeForce 3 card.

Second will be a laptop amd64 3200+ , 1024mb and radeon 9600 mobile.
Third will be my ordinary computer, a 3500+ amd64 2048mb ddram, GeForce 6800 gti.

Got any suggestions for what other kind of setups I should try?

It's more or less a waste of time trying to use anything but an nVidia graphics-card, as they are the only ones that provide some decent drivers.
Other than that, go for it.

I think the no-name card is a good test to see what the base / worst fps will be. What I would really want to see is fps comparisons of Windows vs. Linux with the same hardware.

Good hunting!

I've run EVE on Cedega at work.. it would work one or two times and then it would hang at the authenticating screen during logins, until I reinstlled cedega and then it seemed to work fine for a couple more runs.. hopefully you have better luck than I. I also agree with the above comment, I wouldn't waste time with anything but an NVidia card on Linux.

It's good to try it, although I think you shouldn't use it full-time and pay for it, here's the why:
Cedega took the (open source)code from Wine, and began to further develop the DirectX functions of it. They promised to give a lot of code back to Wine so that Wine would improve too, but they never did that. Cedega isn't open source anymore, so they just improved code that was open source and made it closed source. In my eyes that's not a good thing.
Secondly, there have been game developers that wanted to make a native linux port, but didn't do it at the end because it worked under Cedega too, just not too well.

How will you be running EVE?
wine or cedega?
I run it nicely under cedega with a gf4 card.

ati..? ;)

I run under linux at work on my laptop, but I'm reluctant to go into combat as I've run into a lot of crashes, and mainly use it to switch skill training.

My setup is a 1.66ghz core-duo, 1gb ram, 128mb ati mobility x1400 gfx.

That said, I have noticed improved stability with the last few releases of cedega, but there is the possibility that it could all go to sh*t with the release of the new client (currently testing on singularity). As for when Kali comes out... well there's talk of maybe good things (ie. ccp and cedega folks seem to get on well at the moment), but nothing official.

Good luck!

I've maintained dual-boot at home solely with the purpose of gaming. I use Suse 9.2 for a server, and 10.0 for my desktop. Cedega intrigued me... but I finally decided to keep the gaming where it belongs, on a Windows harddrive dedicated to gaming. If I'm gaming, I'm not multitasking too much, and the servers always around if I really need a 'secure' system to play on.

That being said....

Wonder if it would setup and run well on my AMD 64 and 6800GT... Any games that I have tried to port over always have 'issues'. And as they say, its not 'free', because my time is worth something.

Hey

Ya I run it on linux, Suse with Cedega, I tried it with a no-name and well it worked, but was a bit laggy. I found with the ATI, owing to their bad support for linux, that the no-name worked just as well as the ati. With my GF4 7600 / 7900gtx the game is amazing, but alas, I still play it in windows :-\

I just formatted my HD and devoted the entire thing to SuSE 10.1 (which installed smoothly) Then installed the 3d driver for my Geforce (which also was easy and went smoothly), I then subscribed to cedega and installed it (which again was easy). Downloaded the latest EVE client and installed it into cedega without a hitch, cedega has an option to get the setup for the game from its database. Since removing windows my pc hasnt crashed once, and ive not had to edit a single config file by hand ;) I have to say Eve's sooo much MORE STABLE under Linux. I'm never going back, ive engaged in solo and fleet pvp with no CTDs or lockups, certainly on my hardware, Eve is more playable on linux than under xp, however the graphic quality is not quite as high as windows - now just to figure out how to run two clients at once!
