After two months of tiresome trading and earning a good deal of ISK's, I decided that I needed a change in EvE. Needless to say, I was inspired by the good stories on this website, and set up my rifter for PvP. Put 3xAutocannons and 1xNosferatu in high, scram, web and MWD in mid and 200mm rolled tungsten, armor repper, cap recharger in the lows, said most PvP-setups in the forums.
Being someone that believes that having a good preparation is half the victory I also set up a safespot in the middle of nowhere in the 0.4 system. (Expend your cap with the MWD until nearly empty, jump towards an object and the lady in my ship's computers then says she can't make it all the way due to powershortage and voila, you end up in the middle of nowhere. Make a bookmark of it and you have a fairly safe spot in that system.)
I jumped to the planet within scanning range of the belts and made another bookmark about 300 km from the secure cans that were orbitting the planet. A perfect scanning spot, away from the place other collegues might jump to.
OK, all ready for the first kill, bookmarks made, happy with the riftersetup. Now scanner at 360 and like a real hunter or fisherman .... wait ..... wait .... wait a bit ... a bit more waiting .... and then after 20 minutes of staring at my scanner ....
I saw a lone Rupture jumping the Belts, ratting. He got entangled with 3 rats. I pinpointed the belt he was in and I thought. "Hmmm, a Rupture is a cruiser, a good cruiser from what I saw in the forums, yet the rats could do some damage and by the time I jump in there might be no need anymore for shield damage, I would be directly shooting at his armor right away."
Knowing it would be very risky to attack a rupture with my frigate, but hey, I didn't set up this rifter to live forever!
I quickly devised a battle tactic: wait for rats to do him some damage. after two rats explode, head in and shoot, scram, nos and web.
So I waited until two rats exploded, I was sure he had some damage now, I clicked on the warp button and got in.
Adrenaline was pumping through my veins and when I landed not far from him, I clicked away on my screen. Within seconds I was circling him, webbed, nossed and scrambled him and ... YES!!! ... his shields were already eaten by the rats, direct armor hits! I was eating his armor away and it seemed that it was going great!! I was very happy!
But hey ... whats that? ... I got scrambled .... I got webbed .... darn, he is releasing three medium drones .... woops ... I started to get damage now too ...
This guy obviously didn't take is his role of victim very seriously! He was setup for PvP too! Now the hunter got hunted! My shields were gone and he was eating my armor now. This would be a close fight .... My armor repper was doing great work and I still felt that I had the upper hand in the fight, although his armor was going down very ..very slowly. And then my screen went reddish in colour. Darn! I knew I was a goner now. I got nos'ed. My cap disappeared like snow in the sun and the armor repper had difficulty to sustain my armor. The Rupture captain convo'ed me when I got into structure damage.
This was the convo that followed:
[ 2006.09.18 21:23:13 ] Redbad > congrats, you won fair and square
[ 2006.09.18 21:23:19 ] Redbad > ransom?

[ 2006.09.18 21:26:35 ] mehogepaht > take care
Bad Luck! The first kill, was mr. Mehogepaht killing my rifter ...
In the aftermath I realised one thing! I had loadsa fun planning, scheming, devising battletactics and trying to find an edge to maximize my chances to win that fight that I couldn't care less for losing my trusty rifter to this. I'm setting up a Rupture now to go for my second kill ... hopefully that wont be me this time.

Better luck next time!
nice story :)
one thing - you can make a bm while warping by going to people + places, then adding a bookmark - click "okay" in the dialog box when your ship is where you want the bm to be for.
happy hunting.
a guide to using your scanner.. make life alot easier
The part about the scanner needs some work. I'm not sure I would've understood it myself.
Here's a suggestion to a better guide:
1. Open the overview settings, and configure the filters tab. Make sure 'asteroid belt' is ticked. You will also want to make sure pirate npcs are showing up. Otherwise, you want to have the overview as clean as possible, showing only essential stuff. This is important in order to use the scanner effectively.
2. Now open your scanner. Make sure the 'use overview settings' box is ticked. Make sure the range is set to maximum (this is about 14 AU). Warp to a planet with lots of belts, and hit scan. Note that 360 degree scans can take a long time.
3. Search through the list for any player ships. Ignore the rookie ships and shuttles, and note that some of the others may also be at safespots (frigates and industrials in particular). If you're picking up anything interesting, proceed to scan the belts for them. Click on your ship; a white box should appear over it. Now align the camera so that the box overlaps one of the nearby asteroid belt icons. Make a five degree scan. If you've done it correctly, you should now see the stuff in the belt. If it's empty, you should at least get the belt's name in your scanner; if you're not getting that, your scan wasn't accurate or your overview settings aren't configured the way they should. Proceed to scan the belts around you until you find what you were looking for. Then warp in, and proceed with the attack.
4. If the ship is gone when you arrive, don't be disheartened. Either it is located at a safespot between the planet and the belt, it cloaked, or it warped off. Try heading back to the planet to locate it again.
Tips:
-If you're hunting cruisers or smaller ships, they can often warp out before you even get to the belt. Sometimes when you locate a cruiser in an empty belt, it could be wiser to hold off your attack until it's located in a belt you think they will stay at, a belt filled with npcs for instance.
-Track a ship's movement. Some players warp between the belts from top to bottom. If you find that a player is doing this, you can warp to the next belt in his path and ambush him (this gives you more time to get close enough to scramble before he can run).

This is by far a better guide to scanning, and the system I use too. It should be noted that the direction your ship is facing doesn't matter in the least when scanning (I only mention this because lots of people seem to think it does), only the direction of the camera.
Also, if you have lots of objects behind a belt and want make sure you're only picking things up from the belt, keep in mind that 150,000,000km = 1 AU. So if a belt is 1.2 AU away, multiply 150,000,000 by 1.2 then input that number as your scan range.
You can scan very very quickly this way, and in my opinion using the scanner properly is the most important thing for a pirate to learn (since killing a target isn't all that difficult, as hopefully they won't be setup for PvP - finding the target, now that is hard...).
Nice guide.
Thanks I am sure it'll come in handy.
If you think finding ratters in a belt is hard. Try finding a pirate after ratters in a belt.

OK, look for me when you have the Rupture fitted. :-)
hahaha! I will mr. Mehogepaht! Nice to hear from you again ;-)
Try orbiting him and popping the drones first :-)
I was amazed when I started reading the conversation because this guy killed me too!
It was about a month ago when I had just started playing and was in 0.4 for no good reason when he shows up and blows me to pieces in about 2 seconds.
I haven't been back to 0.4 yet but i'll be going soon, hopefully better prepared this time.
