Eve seems to be changing

Peri·

Something seems to be happening to Eve, I've heard it called the 'WOWification'. I have never played WoW, but many of my fellow pilots left WoW to play Eve, and it seems as though the reasons they left WoW are joining too.

Yesterday, a few of my corp and I ransomed a raven pilot in low sec; he was well over a year old, we asked for 80 mil or we would blow his ship and pod. He said he didn't even know what 'podded' meant. (ebay?)

A month or so ago I fought a megathron with civi shield boosters and small lasers on. (ebay?)

I saw a megathron ratting in 0.4, he was 2 years old, I had a chat with him in local, he knew absolutely nothing about the game. (ebay?)

Shield tanking apocs.

Freighter pilots logging off at gates.

Most of these people respond with smack in local normally consiting of 'u fuck u wacht out ur dead u pussy' or something to that affect.

I'm approaching 12 months in the game now, and I have always seen some people like this, but it seems to be getting so much worse. My question(s) to you is/are, did you experience this when you played WoW, and was that one of the reasons you left? And are you, like me, starting to experience it now?

Ill be laughing my Ass if one day i read that someone bought a 2003 account on ebay for 2000$ and forgot to clone...

Heh, never played WoW but I do notice what people mean. Theres a new breed of EVE gamers that seem to be totally inept at everything.

Jark·

Yeah, well, the obvious answer is to pod them as much as you can. There's a high chance they're not too familiar with the concept of clones (yeah, that would be hilarious, Anon) or even taking care of their new character and its wallet, being as they didn't nurse it up to its current level. Yay fo' free mods.

Sometimes it's not so simple. I started my characters in February and played avidly for about 3 months, then had to take time off for computer, family and work-related issues. I plan on coming back soon, but my character will be 11 months old -- with 3 month old skills/money/equipment. Also, I have forgotten quite a bit about the game and though I'm sure it will come back quickly, I wonder how many of you will think I am an idiot?

Answer: probably all of you... and rightfully so... I'm beginning to remember some of my early "mistakes" -- such as merrily approaching a bottleneck gate in low sec space from 15k out in my new Rupture (god I was proud of that ship)... In any event, I hope you see my point.

You are very right there, in fact there is loads of this in wow. The reason is that in wow your reputation doesent really appeal that much as in eve, ergo people will be acting like complete retards - ergo also why I left the game.

NB; Many former wow players are allready addictive addictive to game, and will threaten their grandma to buy them a eve character for 2k$

Oh yeah, there are some real idiots out there.

I got convo'd last nite by what I thought was a 4 month old player flying a Caracal. He asked me "why are you yellow?".

Being the ever helpful chap that I am, and thinking he was taking the piss, I answered "Because I eat babies!".

"No seriously, why are you yellow?".

I thought "I really could have some fun with this one" ;-)

So I did what I thought would prove beyond all doubt that this person was a total retard (read: ebay isk/account buyer)....I sent a gang request...in a 0.4 sec system. He accepted!

At the time I was in a covert ops ship so followed him around cloaked for a while. If I could have seen the look on his face when I uncloaked right in front of him, I'm sure it would have been akin to a 13 year old boy seeing a naked woman for the first time. Various permutations of the "word" WOWOWOWOW and other equally complicated multi-syllable gems spewed forth.

While watching him attack cruisers with rockets, and almost falling out of my seat laughing, the conversation lead to an interesting discussion of the merits of the Caracal versus his other cruiser the "nighthawk". Apparently he didn't think much of his "command ship" the Ferox, but thought his nighthawk cruiser was much cooler.

At this point I really did think he was just taking the piss. I asked him how he could be so ignorant of EVE at 4 months old not to know what a negative security rating was. It turns out that he and his brother share the account, have only had it for a short time, and dont have a clue how to exist in EVE as they are "too lazy to read stuff".

All I can think is that at least one of his parents should have been sterilised at birth to prevent this from happening...

People like that usually have accidents in life anyway, removing themselves from the Genepool. Hurrah! How I'm still here is a mystery, but if I have kids, I can guarantee it'll have 3 eyes.

This is always going to happen with any MMO, people will get tired and decide to quit.

To me it doesnt change anything, I dont care if its a 1 month old char in a cruiser a or 3 year old char in a titan, if he is a noob he is gonna die. I think of it as a community service, i pod people so they learn quickly the mistakes they make :)

mazzilliu·

the difference between eve and wow(one difference, theres lots of them), is that you can take advantage of ignorant and stupid people.

people like that are great because when i kill them, ill know it cost them real life money. it makes me happier that way.

I'm an ex WOW player, and play on Eve - have done for around....errr...six months now I think. Lots of the problem on WOW is that its a game that doesn't ACTUALLY require much other than repetitive actions to win, eventually. Yes, ok, I know of some really wonderfully amazing RPers on the WOW servers, but even they are getting a bit pissed with the LOLboyz.

As for the account stuff - dunno. I know that I still have to ask my other half simple questions about cruisers etc, but I always remember to upgrade my clones 'etc' when I'm docked, just in case. I've done a couple of really REALLY dumb things, but it hasn't been too bad to date.

Cayden·

I dunno about podding people... that's pretty weak under any circumstance. But removing 1337 d00ds (the UO equivalent to LOLboyz) of their "hard-earned" ships is by all means acceptable.

And I have to say, WoW, though pretty nasty, isn't as bad as some of the slightly older games. WoW seems like the gift of life compared to EQ or UO.

Pandaron·

Earth & Beyond shut down recently, and EvE is getting more press, so of course we're going to see lots of new players.

Getting podded is educational - you should consider yourself a member of the education committee for the preservation of EvE. :D

Hesed·

You know, I do see a fair number of people that seem rather dense. It makes it rather hard to stir things up, especially as I tend to communicate through allusions. In real life though, I rarely meet people that I would truly consider voluntarily mentally impaired, or at least not in public.

Maybe they are distracted, or have highly specialized knowledge, or it's safe to assume that their intelligence is simply not on display twenty-four hours a day. Before reaching the "age of maturity" I probably would not have given anyone such lenient charity.. but let's just say that life is one long lesson in humility. The more we try to think about how other view us without illusions, the more it tends to soften our perspective on other people.

As a result, I have simply come to expect that there is more than terminology and gameplay mechanics for a new protagonist to learn. Not every aspect of the game fits on a cribsheet. A lot of it seems to just be attitude, spacelane smarts, and getting a feel for what's expected in the EVE culture. I think that it's not always obvious to new players that EVE is looking for 'the savvy' to come out, unless they deliberately went looking for 'the savvy' and happened upon EVE.

Wow this is a necropost on my part.

Well, anyways I am an Ex-Wower. I love Eve though. It was that GHSC heist that made me realize that I wasn't actually playing an MMO. So then I headed over here and started playing Eve.

For me it clicked after about hour 5 of the tutorial. I've been incredibly conservative about anything I do in game, probably too much.

Anyways, I love how in Eve if someone talks shit you can bring them task on it.

Oh yeah and I got my dumbass mark in my first week. I found a faction implant and auto-sold it. All I saw was 10 million isk so I was in a state of total shock since I had struggled to put together my first 500,000
