Bait & Switch

hawkpryde·

I am a two month old player to Eve and have been an avid reader of eve-pirate.com since I started. I wanted to share one of my stories just cause it has amused me thinking about it. I have become better and better at ore thieving and disrupting macrominer operations by flying in with my Burst Frigate and swapping jetcans. If they fire on me then I make my escape back to station and return with my Ferox to put the hurt on them. If they don’t take their ore back and get flagged then I return with my trusty Bestower and haul my loot away.
Just recently I was doing some belt hopping in my Burst when I came across an Osprey with a mining setup. He had mining drones and several mining laser hard at work. I come up on his jetcan and he has it practically full with plagioclase so I do what any true-blue ore thief would do. I start my own jetcan and make what is his mine. It takes a few minutes for him to react but he takes something out of the can and starts blinking red. He might have even fired at me but I was out of range when it happened and my shields didn’t move. So I race back to the station like a girl on her first date, grab my Ferox and race back. When I get there I am disappointed to find he is gone. I check the timer and I have been flagged by his corp. I take a quick look in the belt and find a Raven sitting there. I nearly wet myself knowing he could pound me to ash so I look up his info and find he is with the corp I am flagged for.
So I quickly start to warp out of the belt heading for the station when he targets me and blinks red. As the warp cycle going through its motions I let off a spread of five Havoc missiles in his direction and then I am in warp. The typical noob that I am never bothered to setup a bookmark for the station. So as I am waiting to traverse the fifteen kilometers at just over two hundred m/s I see the Osprey pop out of the station he is just twenty five kilometers away so I target him and begin firing. Just as he is down to half armor the Raven warps in at ten kilometers behind me. I laugh as the distance closes to the station. I have the Osprey just into structure when I hear my worst nightmare.
“Docking permission denied.” NOOOOO!!!!!
So I quickly take down the Osprey then I turn my attention to the Raven. I launch my drones and hit him with my medium nosferatu. With missile launchers and my med autocannon blazing his shields start to drop. Unfortunately my shields are dropping way faster then his. I am hoping my armor hardeners will give me the edge. Nope he is cutting through them like butter despite my Medium Armor repairer. Then it gets worse. My capacitor is empty. Damn I am half way into his armor when he has me at half structure. In one last act of defiance I target lock the station and ignoring the warning I fire my autocannon at it. Next thing I know there’s a blinding light and I am floating in just a pod. I head into the station and check my evemail. YES!!! Concord got the kill.
So I jump in my Burst and head back out. I race to the nearest can and it’s the Osprey’s. A couple of cargo expanders and mining laser two is all that’s their but the Raven starts firing again getting my poor frigate down to half armor before I get back into the station. I quickly repair it and race back out to get my can. I grab it and head back in. With my adrenaline pumping I stop to look at local and they are flaming me for taking the ore in the first place and was it worth it now. Hell yes!! When the time goes to zero I head out with my Bestower and head for the Belt. LOL I guess in all the excitement they forgot about it. It takes two trips to get it all back.
In the second trip there’s a Pod sitting next to a can so head over and swipe up its contents to. It has a Cargo expander with a name I don’t recognize so I check the market. Twelve mil ISK is the going price of this piece of hardware. So I sell it and head out to get a new Ferox with huge smile on my face. I wonder what tomorrow will bring when I do it all again.

Why does Ander let this site get polluted with Macro witchhunts and simple + retarded ore theiving..... Grow balls and move to lowsec, get -5.0 and then come post.

B·

God you're a moron. First you open fire on someone when you know a Raven is chasing you, then, instead of waiting out the 30 seconds and docking, you start shooting instead. Finally, in a final act of dishonor, you get the station to kill you when the Ravn won fair and square.

Honestly, I'm really getting tired of these ore stories. I remember when eve pirate used to be filled with stories of epic battles and tactical genius. Now all I see is the same story over and over again of taking ore, and on a side note PIRATES SHOULDN'T CARE ABOUT STEALING ORE!, and goading miner into shooting them. And on top of that, this guy went to a new low and aggroed the station just so the Raven couldn't get the damn kill mail he deserved.

Please take a short trip into Curse for a bit and watch some real pirates pop you and munch on your frozen corpse before you even realise your locked.

I'm really starting to loath this Ore Pirates.

happyapples·

If you aggroed the station, how did you manage to undock again in your frigate without getting blasted? You should have been on a 15 minute timer against CONCORD.

Setana Manoro·

It is not Macro witch hunt OrangeAfroMan; i am doing something similar to him, but i do it in a cruiser and i annoy them to get them to come out and fight. You can get some great fights against what would appear low odds this way, especially when you annoy some miners that are members of an alliance.

OrangeAfroMan-·

Oh is that so? But you can always just run and hide and not worry about having to fight anybody you don't want to. There is no threat of loss for you, and you'll find that if you actually do something worth posting on this site, you will be in a whole different world, where you cant just hide and say haha look noob you died, All your haulers are belong to us.
Now go do some real piracy or come to Derelik to die.

Excuse me OrangeAfroMan, I would just like to say that stop spamming the comment boxes with flames.

I have been a pirate since i started eve, outlaw since the first few weeks and have rarely been above -5.0 only recently have i raised my security status before you try and call me a wanabe. All my kills were low sec kills and i take on much bigger targets.

For example i killed a brutix in a t1 fitted punisher.

Back to the topic at hand, Stop spamming the comments with flames, its not big and its not funny. You just sound like an idiot anyway. The odd flame comment in moderation i have no argument with. But i have seen you do it several times.

And just out of Interest.. is OrangeAfroMan your in game character name?

OrangeAfroMan-·

Yes it is, OrangeAfroMan. Look me up, pay me a visit, whatever.

Just because you may or may not have been a pirate etc doesn't make stories like these any more piracy.. It's just laming tactics.

Btw killing a BC in a frig aint hard. At all.

freaky·

OrangeAfroMan--seems none of these stories please you.

Why dont you regale us with your tales of your brand of piracy?

Looking at a lot of your recent kills on various killboards shows it doesn't seem you practice what you preach.

Sure you fight in low sec and 0.0. Sure you have a few 1 on 1's. Most were very even matches.

The majority of the kills though show you having the odds and also the edge in firepopwer. Where is the challenge in that? Where is the risk in that?

My point is not every story is a tale of an epic battle against all odds. Some are people just goofing around and having some fun.

You are an experienced pvp'er I am sure. Keep in mind though lots of these guys are still n00bs barely a few months old. 0.0 would likely eat them up as you know. Even low sec is fairly dangerous for them so it doesn't really attract them to hang there much at this point.

I read a lot of stories on here that don't interest me but I don't rag on the person because their style of play differs from mine.

Maybe you just need a hug? :)

OrangeAfroMan-·

First, any killmails with me on them are either very old, or ones posted by my alliance mates even though I ask to be removed. I dont post any killmails on public boards. Second, you have to agree that this isnt real piracy, its pretty pathetic :/

Here is a little unedited, no sound clip of me in a Claw along with a Hawk (using precisions :/ ) against a 1600mm plate, webbing, nossing Thorax. The retri you see there isnt shooting because the Thorax only fired on outlaws. (coming soon, I cant seem to find my compression program and I dont think you'd like to dl 902MB for 3 minutes of footage.)

freaky·

I wouldnt consider 3 weeks too old as far of the killmail I saw of you in your AF with your friends in 2 BS, another AF and a t2 cruiser taking out a Mammoth.

That's hardcore piracy? Or real piracy simply because it was in low sec? I dont get how 5 ships vs a hauler is real piracy as you call it.

There's no need for you to post any video of you doing anything. I don't think anyone is questioning or doubting your encounters.

I think it's more about flaming people for their style of play.

Your flaming him is about as weak as you say his pirating skills are. He's a 2 month old player still learning the ropes. Cut him a little slack. If it was a 3 year old character doing this, then I could see a lil flaming. :)

My only gripe about his story was he didnt use paragraphs. :)

barvo·

Freaky, you're doing a good job of detracting from OrangeAfroMans' valid point that the whole bait and switch thing is old. It's old for me, and I've been playing like 6 months, so god knows how old it is for some of the readers out there.

Bait and switch is zero risk (unless you're stupid) which means you answer to no-one, especially if you're still in a noob corp and can't even be war dec'd. To my mind, that is griefing rather than piracy.

DirtyBeaver gave me my first experience of being pirated, by tanking gate sentries to blow me up in my Iteron. HBJ continued to do it in the lowsec systems of KA. That's piracy. This is just the equivalent of those thugs who scream abuse at footballers from the front row of the stands for the whole match and then get the player censured for sticking two fingers up. It's pathetic, and irrespective of the platform Orange is talking from, he's right.

Hawk Pryde·

OK first I want to say I do appreciate everyone's feedback. When I entered the story into the submit window it had indentations for each paragraph. I dont know what happened to them. I am a published writer and do know how to do this.
Now as far as the content of the story goes. I didn't write about my friends and I over powering someone in lowsec space or my exploits in single combat against someone who has been playing the game for months less then me. I wrote a story about someone using bait and switch tactics and the tables got turned on me. You missed the whole point of the story. I enjoy playing this game so much I lost a 25 mil ISK ship and just laughed it off. I am not rich. I have dont tons of mining and Ninja mining in low sec space to build up the ore that I have but in hard ISK its peanuts compared to what alot of you experienced players probably have. I found a way to cut my teeth in PVP without putting myself in a position to get PK'd. I have some headgear helping me with my skill training so some day when I am all growed up I can come play with the big boys.
I am not the kind of person who flames people for any way they play this game. Thats the great thing about this game. You can play how you want not within any set confines or story line. I was hoping for some actual critisism on the writing itself or a fair assessment of the story itself. I didnt expect to get so much I am better then you, you are beneath me and I am going to make everyone else believe me by consistantly bashing you. When I read stories here I dont judge them on wether its something I would or wouldnt do. I just enjoy reading about how others found their fun in a game i have come to really enjoy. I hope you will accept my story as the same thing. See you all in the game.

OrangeAfroMan-·

Like I said in my post, those killmails are posted by alliance mates, and I always ask to be removed. By the way those were kills in the U'K war.

Still trying to get some vids compressed as I seem to have removed my program :/

Bro, Afroman doesn't have a point, he has an opinion. That's all. I respect his opinion. I respect his play style even though I may not enjoy playing the game the same way he does. Still, even though I might not like his style of play, I wouldn't flame him or call him names or anything.

You said this ore swapping stuff is old. Everything in the game is old at this point. Gank squads, gate campers, gate snipers, scammers, fleet wars, POS sieges, etc.

It's all been done at this point. It's really what you make it. Bashing someone because you don't like their style of pirating is lame. It's like me bashing someone who likes to do mining all day. I don't see the thrill in it, but they do and that's great. Do I think they're lame? Nope.

I keep hearing from people that bait switching has zero risk. Have you done it much? Ever fly into a 10 man op, swap a few cans, sit there for a few mins and then fight 3 or 4 people that come back for revenge? It happens. I've had quite a few enjoyable fights as a result of stealing ore. Stealing ore from a corp with 20+ people in the same system then waiting for the welcome committee can be a lot of fun.

I've been war dec'd by the corp I stole from, then war dec'd by merc corps who were hired to kill me. There is a lot of fun to be had with the whole "old lame ore swapping" tactic.

Afroman-What difference does it make who posts the killmails? My point was you're saying this guy is lame for swapping cans and fighting his aggressors simply because he does it in high sec it seems. He was placing himself at risk since he gets flagged to their entire corp.

Whereas you are ganking haulers with a gang of 5. I can't grasp how your form of piracy differs or is any better than the author's.

I can understand you not liking his style of play, tactics or whatever. To each their own I say.

It just seems poor taste to flame every post you don't like as if you're so much better of a pirate. It's also in poor taste to insult Ander, considering he provides an entertaining outlet here.

You're likely a better pvp'er than the author, but in the end, both styles of play are really just two different forms of piracy.

Armor tank + autocannon on a ferox wtf?

5 heavy launchers 2 rails
3 large extenders 1 inul 1 warp disruptor
2 shield power relays and 2 ballistic control units

If the raven was at 1/2 armor with you armor + shield tanking a ferox and using a autocannon! then i think this setup would of killed him

Hawk Pryde·

Thanks anonymous. I will try that setup. I am worried that the lack of a nosferatu would have left me in the same position I was in but I imagine you have more experience in the game then I do *wink*, so I will give it a shot.

OrangeAfroMan-·

My point about who posts the mails is that they are far from a representation of my typical PvP experiences in EvE. 99% of what I do is solo, and those mails dont get posted. You can't point to some random mails that obviously would have been group ops if someone else posted them and say that's how I roll.

Setana Manoro·

Please stop making such comments about me OAM or what you think you know of my gaming style.
You don't know how i play the game. You don't know that i stay there put in a T2 fitted cruiser with over 20 mil in mods on it and if a bc/bs appears i will fight it.
Some ppl play this way for fun, granted some are dumb idiots like the poster of this article but some do have a code after which they play.
Mine is :
- if they come in a bigger ship i don't run, unless it's something i have absolutely no chance against
- if i promise to leave them alone or i ransome they're ore and they pay i never trouble them again
- if i can't get a fight out of a corp or alliance - because i'm after the fights not the making of the isk in stealing ore, i leave them alone
Now, if this principles are too much for you to understand, then by all means, you have a problem, and maybe you should stop playing eve and/or whining.

As for the catch-phrase "come to low-sec if you have a pair and be a pirate", i remind you that :
1 - low-sec is screwed up - a lot of risk and no reward
2 - i don't like gangs and/or blobs
3 - i can barely get a fight in low-sec, which means that it is either a pair of HAC's chasing me or some T1 cruisers with T2 frigs ... not much chances in 1 vs a lot, now is it?
4 - this char is 2 months old and training for amarr recons. The +3 set is quite expensive - for me at least don't know how rich you are, and i do need it intact to get to amarr recons in 3 months or less.

If there is something that you still find ... hard to comprehend, feel free to convo me in-game and i will try my best to explain it to you.
