Hi, name's Nalar, Nalar Marnith.
After reading this site I decided I'd had enough of being the hunted, time to move to the other side of the line.
Last night I quit my corporation (who I never really had any contact with anyway) and kitted out my rifter. Going on the suggestions of Pliskkenn I went with a simple and effective setup. The only change I made was fitting a damage control instead of the gyro stab. Used carbine repeating cannons and the plate was crystaline carbonide. Other than that, all tech I stuff. No point fitting a MWD even if I had the cap or grid.
Highs: 3 150mm's / Small Nos
Meds: Ab / Web / Warp Scram (7.5)
Lows: 200mm Plate, Damage control, Small Armour Rep.
So after half an hour flying around and getting my gear together I decided it was time to make my move. Flying in to the nearest .4 system I made a couple of hasty ss. I then started on learning how to use the scanner. Luckily for me there were only 4 belts in this system and they were all a good few degrees from each other.
After looking through local, I found 2 likely candidates. A 3 day old n00b and a guy in a caracal who'd been playing for a month. Figuring the caracal pilot wouldn't have decent enough skills to effectively pilot his ship I decided he was my target.
Once I'd worked out what belt he was in I warped in at 10 and landed 25 away, damn. He was in the middle of taking out a cruiser spawn, so I thought I'd wait it out. No dice, he warped out mid way through. Crap. So I trundle back to my safe and start scanning again. Found him at another belt. They just don't learn!
Warping in at 10 I landed about 9km off, with him busy taking out a frigate spawn I AB'd towards him. As the spawn explodes I hit 8k, lock, activate scrambler. Set orbit for 2.5k, active nos, guns, damage control and web. Settled in for a tight orbit and began taking down his shields. At 75% shields he begins to return fire with 2x assault launchers and 2x heavies, his salvager doing me no harm :)
The first couple of salvo's took out most of my shields, no surprise there. I continued to fire, after hitting about 80% armour I'd broken his tank. Halfway through his armour my last attempt to run my repper met with a message indicating no cap, shit, in the heat of the moment I forgot to watch my cap. Luckily my nos kept power to the web, scram and AB. Wiping out his armour took less time than I though, those EMP rounds are magic. At this point I decided to convo, wanted to see if he'd pay ransom. I had very little armour left myself, so I continued to fire while waiting for him to answer.
No response, hmm. Boom goes his ship. Lock and scram the pod, got it. Convo again, no response.
*squish*
Quickly collect the loot (all TI crap), and body, then warp to my safe. Thankfully I remembered not to warp to the station! It was then I noticed some of the windows I had minimised were flashing, he had responded to my convo. Now I felt like a bit of a bastard, plus I might have got a mil from him instead of a few hundred thousand worth of crud.
Still, it was AWESOME. I did it all thanks to you guys. All the things I've read here made it possible. Sporting my new sec status of -0.9 I had to grin. At least now I look more like a pirate :)
Oh I almost forgot. In the loot I found 2 WCS, which meant he could have run. Poor n00blet must've forgotten. Turns out he also had a few drones that he never launched. Considering the fight lasted about a minute I'm surprised...

Your failure to keep notice of the convo channel will now have given you a rep as someone who asks for a ransom and then destroys them anyway. If word spreads, people aren't going to trust any attempts by you to ransom, and are just going to fight to the death. Good luck with that. :-)
To clarify, when I said I wanted to see if he'd pay ransom, no window actually came up (even though i had other chat windows up). For some reason it decided to join with my windows down the bottom.
So I never actually got around to asking for ransom, i just assumed he'd not accepted the convo.

he should have run as soon as you broke his tank, maybe he selected a warp target that ment he had to turn around 180 degrees or something, and the webifier stopped him gettin gthere in time?
Are you sure he actually had the WCSs fitted? The kill mail also shows items in cargo, which he may have just looted from belt rats.
I disagree, Black Claw, since the other guy never actually paid anything, or for that matter asked for anything, Nalar was doing nothing wrong in my book.
And nice kill ;) Assault launchers can be annoying against frigs :)
Welcome to the darkside boyo! Nothing in eve is ever quite the same after you make that leap. Just remember that silly notions about honor among pirates to keep their word are less than true, but it does make the game a lot better to play. So good luck on your next ransom. I like seeing things pop myself, but oh well!
Welcome to the darkside! Good read, I have had that where pilots freeze and panic.
Thats when you get them.
Ah, well in actual fact I got them as loot. So I may have been incorrect in assuming he actually had them fitted.
I always wonder in what 0.4 system you go look for these targets as in my 0.4 system I never see them sitting in the belts.
Well I got lucky, and again the other night in finding n00bs in caracals. Both were pretty easy take-downs. I then spent 2 hours flying around finding nothing. So it's a luck thing too. Download the eve 2d map (pdf, damn good) and find some nice quiet 0.4 system. If it's one of a small set, even better.
They are not so much rules as guidlines anyway :D
