Looking for Miners

Moridin920·

I was cruising around a system (which I won't mention here) with an alt in a shuttle just looking for miners to possibly ransom. While that was happening, my friend in real life was fitting a ship and coming up to join me. He had never had a pvp kill before; his only experiences with pvp ended up with him dying. I promised him I'd get him a killmail before the week was done.

I'm in a megathron set up to snipe, but when I load antimatter into the guns the optimal range is 49km and the dps is pretty awesome. Since my friend was in a cruiser, I figured he could tackle and kill drones and frigates while I took out bigger ships. My friend (in a Rupture) warps to my megathron at my safe spot.

I'm getting another Megathron on scan, sketching me out a little bit, but I'm also getting an Omen and a Vexor, which would be fun kills. My alt's shuttle happens upon all three of them mining at a belt, I warp away as quick as possible to not spook them. Now I'm thinking. If that megathron is mining and the cruisers are protection, we could kill at least the cruisers before we bug out. It's prudent at this point to mention that this constellation is rife with anti-pirates, who not only have a defense force alliance set up, but who are very, very angry with me because I have been killing and ransoming their miners. Basically, I always have to look out for 4 battleships and a few HACs jumping in and warping right to a distress call. That's why I wasn't thinking much about killing the megathron; if it had any sort of tank at all, the chances were we'd end up getting ganked. I send the shuttle back at 70km quickly just to see what is going on. There is now an industrial there picking up ore from a can too; I warp away again.

I figure the megathron is mining. There is no barge there, and it wouldn't make very much sense (or at least I thought at the time) for the cruisers to be mining. So I tell my friend who the primary is (the Omen), tell him to warp to 0, warp scram and web him. I start warping and I tell him to wait a few seconds before he goes, as I want to warp in at around the same time and battleships warp significantly slower than cruisers. So we warp in, guns blazing eager to get a quick cruiser kill and bug out before the cavalry arrive.

Apparentally, the Omen had all his lows fitted with cargo expanders, and I took him out with two volleys of my guns; the Vexor warps away in the meantime. The other Megathron was at optimal range, so I thought, 'Screw it', told my friend to lock down the Megathron as soon as he could, and started blasting at it. I noticed something odd about it though: it's shields were going down very slowly, or slower than they should have been at least. I wondered at it for a second, then decided it wasn't important, since he was doing about 100 damage every time I fired all my 7 guns, sending around 1500 damage his way. I was surpised that he fit guns onto a miner at all. No drones attacking my friend in the cruiser was a plus, too.

It went down very quick after the shields were gone, and when you see the kill mail I think you'll know why. As the Megathron is exploding, the Vexor warps in again. I really don't know why. He ended up dying too. I warped off to a safe spot, my friend collected the loot, warped to me, and we ended up laughing our heads off when the other Megathron pilot told me he didn't have any insurance, and we were "evil bastards."

In the end, I think they all had a sort of hybrid combat/miner set up going. The worst part? The Megathron pilot was from 2004.

--- And here's the worst Megathron fitting I have ever seen in my life. Shield tanked, guns with different optimals (making at least half of them useless while the other half are hitting), and mining lasers equipped also. I think he couldn't decide what he wanted to do: mine or protect. ---

Here's the killboard link, a little more organized if you don't want to go through all that text and try to figure out what was fitted.

Also, if anyone could please tell me why he thought a 10mn AB would be good for a battleship's mid slot, that would be appreciated.

You kinda shot yourself in the foot there. You started you didn't want to reveal the system, but then went ahead and included it in the killmails.

Still, for what it's worth, good job. Bag a few kills for me while you're there :)

10mn afterburner on a battleship? O_o

MinithJin·

In most scenarios you can expect that the miner has no idea how to fit a ship ^_^

And you did sorta shoot yourself in the foot with the system name :F

Betcha ten bucks that guy is a bought character.

Would have to be a purchased char. No one could be a miner for 3 years and never have had a combat char.

That said, i've seen combat pilots with some weird freaking setups.
